Whereas, prior to the dramatic Brussels chapters, we hear the rumble of international cataclysm behind the noises of the everyday, the second half of the novel seems to resemble a more familiar Victorian multiplot narrative, with its domestic dramas untroubled by threats of invasion or financial chaos.
