For over thirty years from its creation, the office’s influence on university campuses and in setting the national research agenda waned as agencies such as NSF, National Institutes of Health, Department of Energy, and NASA grew in stature and reach. All told, it has backed the work of fifty-seven Nobel laureates—and in some cases provided support for the investigations that won science’s top honor.
