The client application processes the stream to display audio and a moving picture much like a television displays a program. The service is on demand in the sense that the user determines when the display is initiated, but the degree of interactivity is limited, and the quality of the image is less than that of commercial television. A more complex class of interactive services results when more than two users are involved.

The connectionless orientation means that the routers do not need to keep any state information about speci®c users or their packet ¯ows. This situation allows IP to scale to very large networks.
