Chapter 8 explains how and why, in our ﬁeld of study, the initial focus on the adoption and diffusion of innovations has moved towards understanding processes of innovation design. It is proposed that the key role for communication in innovation processes is to enhance network building through social learning and negotiation. Therefore, Chapter 9 presents key insights on human learning. This includes a discussion of some of the key forms and mechanisms of learning, as well as an overview of possible stimulants, obstacles and pre-conditions for learning.
Again, the key function for communication workers here is to facilitate the process, and it is important to work towards a balance between new technical devices and novel social–organisational arrangements.
