From here Vanity Fair moves more rapidly; key moments in British history of the next two decades (Catholic Emancipation in 1829, the first Reform Bill in 1832) are noted only in passing. With Napoleon舗s final defeat, and with the Congress of Vienna舗s inauguration of a period of Continental reaction and British national security, history seems no longer to touch these characters, who have largely retreated into the absorbing dynamics of private life. Whereas, prior to the dramatic Brussels chapters, we hear the rumble of international cataclysm behind the noises of the everyday, the second half of the novel seems to resemble a more familiar Victorian multiplot narrative, with its domestic dramas untroubled by threats of invasion or financial chaos.

He meets William Maginn, an editor, who gives him his first work as a journalist. 1832 Now twenty-one, Thackeray receives an inheritance from his fa ther of about 20,000 pounds. 1833 Thackeray abandons his studies, invests part of his fortune in the newspaper The National Standard, and travels to Paris as its corre spondent; the paper fails after two years, an experience that will provide material for his novel The Newcomes. Thackeray loses his fortune through gambling and speculation; most of the loss results from the failure of an Indian bank in which he had invested.

Like Vanity Fair, most of Thackeray舗s work first appeared in 舠numbers,舡 or installments, including The Snobs of England, by One of Themselves (1846舒1847), the semi-autobiographical Pendennis (1848-1850), its sequel The Newcomes (1853-1855), and The Virginians (1857-1859). One exception, The History of Henry Esmond (1852), a historical novel, was initially published in three volumes. Thackeray舗s work and that of his contemporary Charles Dickens have often been compared. William Makepeace Thackeray portrayed the society and personages of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century England with sardonic wit and eloquence.
